November 18, 1984

Baba inaugurated the First International Seva Dal Conference in Poornachandra Auditorium at Prasanthi Nilayam on 18th November, 1984. He also inaugurated at the Hill View Amphitheatre on the 18th, an exhibition entitled “Sathya Sai Darshan,” organised as part of the Conference.

Baba accompanied by Sri. S. B. Chavan, Union Minister for Defence, came in a procession to the Auditorium. Sri Indulal Shah welcomed Sri. S. B. Chavan and the delegates. Sri V. Srinivasan, Vice Chairman of the World Council; Sri V. K. Narasimhan and Sri S. B. Chavan addressed the delegates at the inaugural session. In His Inaugural Address, Baba exhorted the Seva Dal to carry on their service activities in a spirit of sacred dedication, without regard for race, religion, class or caste.

During the joint session at Poornachandra Auditorium on the 20th, Baba went around the hall and blessed the delegates, occasionally speaking to some of them. He gave His Valedictory Message at Poornachandra Auditorium on the 21st. He explained the meaning of village adoption and said that the Sai Organisation should meet all the needs of the villages in the areas of education, water supply, health, roads etc., and the spiritual and moral needs of the villagers. He concluded His Discourse with a Bhajan.

Baba witnessed an unforgettable display of gymnastic feats by students, right from the primary classes all the way up to postgraduates at the vast Hill View Stadium on the 21st evening. He not only sat through the entire programme, but also took part in the last item of the evening, as the helmsman in a boat who helps the devotees cross the stormy sea of worldly life. As Baba alighted from the boat when the lights came on, His appearance was a very delightful surprise to the vast gathering.

During this conference, various wings of the Organisation such as Bhajan Mandali, Seva Dal, Study Circle, Mahila Vibhag, Mahila Seva Dal, Bal- Vikas etc., were classified into three wings : (1) Spiritual Wing (2) Service Wing, and (3) Educational Wing.

December 27 – 31, 1983

A five-day World Conference of Bal Vikas teachers and students was inaugurated in Poornachandra Auditorium by Baba at 9.30 am on 27th December 1983. The Conference was held between the 27th and the 31st of December. Major General Mahadevan, State President of Tamil Nadu Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, welcomed Baba and the delegates. He stated in his speech that it was a red-letter day in the history of the Bal Vikas Movement. In His Inaugural Address Baba pointed out how Bharatiya culture had survived the vicissitudes of centuries, while many ancient civilisations had disappeared. It was the duty of the Bharatiyas to preserve this heritage and live up to the values represented by this culture. He gave the details of the cyclone that had hit Puttaparthi the previous night. A sudden gale brought down the Shamianas (tents) where the Bal Vikas students were housed. Children were trapped underneath the collapsed tents. However, the only words that escaped their mouths were “Sai Ram”. They started singing Bhajans immediately. He pointed out that the Bal Vikas training had trained them to face such ordeals with courage and faith.

Baba addressed the Bal Vikas and Pre-Seva Dal students in a special session on 30th morning at Poornachandra Auditorium. He told the students that success in any endeavour could be secured only if effort was coupled with Divine Grace. Baba announced that all the expenses of their stay at Prasanthi Nilayam would be borne by the Central Trust. He blessed the Bal Vikas and Pre-Seva Dal students with Padanamaskar on 31st morning in the open ground around the Prasanthi Mandir, and distributed clothes to all the children and teachers. During the Valedictory function in Poornachandra Auditorium on 31st evening, He blessed the assembly with His New Year Message.

On 28th, Baba inaugurated an international exhibition of paintings and handicrafts done by Bal Vikas students in the foyer of Sathya Sai College. He witnessed the cultural programmes and an international rally by 7,000 children at Hill View Stadium on 29th and 30th December.

5th All India Conference of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Dal , November 19, 1981 to November 21, 1981

The 5th All India Conference of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Dal was held at Prasanthi Nilayam from 19th to 21st November, 1981. Nearly 3,000 delegates from all over India attended the Conference. In His Inaugural Discourse, Baba exhorted the Seva Dal members to take Seva as Sadhana and an offering to the Lord. He blessed the delegates with His Valedictory Address on 21st November. During the three days of the conference, the students of Sri Sathya Sai Schools from Ooty, Delhi and Puttaparthi presented cultural programmes at Poornachandra Auditorium in the evenings.

Third World Conference and Ninth All-India Conference, November 19 – 23, 1980

The Third World Conference and Ninth All-India Conference of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations was held at Prasanthi Nilayam from 19th to the 21st of November 1980, as part of Baba’s Birthday celebrations that commenced from the 17th of November.

He inaugurated the World Conference of the Sri Sathya Sai Organisations in the Poornachandra Auditorium amidst Vedic chants at 10.00 am on the 19th. Prof. V. K. Gokak welcomed the gathering. Sri Indulal Shah, Chairman, World Council, announced that the first day of the sessions would be devoted to a symposium on the ‘Sai Path’, with keynote addresses emphasising six special aspects. Dr. S. Bhagavantam, Mr. Victor Kanu from Africa, Reverend Robert Pipes of the Baptist Church of Washington, Mrs. Elsie Cowan from USA, Sri Jagadesan from Malaysia, Dr. John Hislop of USA, Dr. Bashiruddin of Osmania University, and a few students of the Sathya Sai colleges addressed the Symposium. Baba then delivered His Inaugural Address. Dr. Bhagavantam offered several books written in different languages, at the Lotus Feet for blessings. Baba also released the book “Golden Age, 1980” and an LP record “Sai Katha”, composed by Sri Adinarayana Rao and set to music by Sri Rajeswara Rao. The Symposium for the day concluded with the violin recital of the renowned violinist Pandit V.G. Jog and a flute recital by Sri Hariprasad Chaurasia.

On 20th, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, world-renowned exponent of Santoor, gave a recital accompanied by Sri Swapan Chaudhuri on the Tabla. The famous playback singers Smt. Minoo Purushottam and Sri Mahendra Kapoor rendered devotional songs composed by Sri Manoj Kumar, renowned Hindi cine star and an ardent Sai devotee.

During the valedictory function on 21st November, Sri Indulal Shah announced the decisions arrived at in the World Conference and blessed by Baba. Baba then delivered His Valedictory Address. Mr. Charles Penn, Dr. Benito Reyes, founder of The World University at California, and Mr. Curth Orefjaerd from Sweden, shared their experiences with the delegates. The renowned vocalists Smt. Radha and Smt. Jayalakshmi sang devotional songs at the end.

Baba gave Darshan early in the morning on the 23rd and moved in a procession to the Samadhi of His parents. He then reached the site where He laid the foundation for a 100-bed hospital. Thereafter, Baba proceeded to the Poornachandra Auditorium. He accepted the garlands offered by nationals from over 50 countries. Sri S.B. Chavan, Union Minister for Education, and Sri Govind Narain, Governor of Karnataka, addressed the devotees prior to Baba’s Birthday Message. Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi rendered devotional songs that evening. Baba rejoiced the devotees with His Darshan reclining on the Jhoola. Smt. P. Suseela and party presented Rama Katha.

  • Decisions were taken to introduce Door to Door Health programme and to conduct study circles in a more comprehensive way i.e., covering (a) Agricultual and Industrial workers; (b) Devotees and (c) Educationalists and Intellectuals in the Society with topics of Karma, Bhakthi and Jnana, respectively. The aim of all these was to increase spiritual thinking in people and to enable them to take part in the silent spiritual Revolution being carried out by Baba.
  • The office of the World Council was shifted from Dharmakshetra to Prasanthi Nilayam.
  • Responding to the prayers of the Organisation Members, Baba, out of His infinite Grace and Mercy, granted the Divine Permanent Charter containing the objectives and 9-Point Code of Conduct which was published on 14-1-1981 by the then World Council.

Fourth All India Bal Vikas Conference, November 20 – 21, 1979

On 20th and 21st November, the Fourth All India Bal Vikas Conference was held at Prasanthi Nilayam. On 20th morning, Baba addressed 2,000 Bal Vikas Gurus in Poornachandra Auditorium. On 21st morning, Baba gave His Valedictory Message. On 20th and 21st many cultural programmes were presented in the Divine Presence by the Bal Vikas students from Ooty, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, and Karnataka. Baba witnessed a Bal Vikas rally at Prasanthi Nilayam on 22nd morning. The alumni of Sri Sathya Sai College (Boys) celebrated the first Annual Day of Kingdom of Sathya Sai (alumni association of Sri Sathya Sai College) in the Divine Presence that evening.

Baba installed marble idols of Shiva and Nandi at the site of the birthplace of the Avatar in the village of Puttaparthi on 23rd morning. He also visited the Samadhi of the parents. Baba proceeded in a procession from the Prasanthi Mandir to the auditorium where the Members of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust offered floral garlands to Baba. Baba then blessed the devotees with His Birthday Message.

4th All India Seva Dal Conference, November 20 – 23, 1978

Baba inaugurated the 4th All India Seva Dal Conference at Poornachandra Auditorium at 4.30 pm on 20th November. Members of the Central and State Trusts, State Presidents of the Organisation from all the states, a batch of Seva Dal from Malaysia and 300 visitors from other countries were present during the Conference. Baba delivered His Inaugural Address. The State Seva Dal Conveners then presented the service activity reports of their respective states.

Baba was present in the Poornachandra Auditorium on 21st evening during the general session of the conference. He delivered His Valedictory Discourse at Poornachandra Auditorium on 22nd during the concluding session of the Seva Dal conference.

Eighth All India Conference of the Office Bearers, November 20 – 22, 1977

The Eighth All India Conference of the Office Bearers of the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations was held at Prasanthi Nilayam between 20th and 22nd November. Baba lit the lamp and inaugurated the Conference on 20th morning. Baba in His Inaugural Address, stressed on the need for character as the basic expression of devotion, and faith as the basic need for service. Sri Indulal Shah, Dr. S. Bhagavantam, Prof. V. K. Gokak, Sri A. K. Dutt, Justice K. Balakrishna Eradi, Dr. K. M. Mistry, and Smt. Shanta Nair addressed the delegates.

At the Valedictory function held in Poornachandra Auditorium on 22nd November, Sri Indulal Shah presented the recommendations of the Conference blessed by Baba. Prof. V. K Gokak addressed the delegates. Baba blessed the delegates with His Valedictory Message. The renowned singers Smt. Radha and Smt. Jayalakshmi gave a recital on this occasion.

In this conference, greater and sole importance was given to individual Sadhana. It was stated that every worker and his family members should carry out their personal Sadhana with utmost devotion and steadfastness. Only then could they realise the all pervasive nature of divinity and the inner significance of bhajans. The delegates were urged to carry out service activities so as to reflect spirituality in all aspects.

Several conference during 50th, Birthday Celebrations, November 15 – 23, 1975

The 50th Birthday celebrations were held at Prashanti Nilayam between 14th and 24th November, 1975. The Third All India Sathya Sai Seva Dal Conference and the Third All India Bal Vikas Gurus Conference were held at Prashanti Nilayam on 15th, 16th and 17th of November. The Rathotsavam started from Prasanthi Mandir at 8.30 am on the 18th morning. Chandi Yaga was performed in the Divine Presence from the 19th to the 23rd of November. Baba performed the Poornahuti of the Yaga on 23rd morning.

The Second World Conference of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations was held in the Divine Presence at Prasanthi Nilayam between the 19th and the 21st of November, 1975. A rally by the Bal Vikas students was held on the 22nd. Baba blessed the devotees with His Darshan from a helicopter on 23rd morning. When the helicopter landed, Sri Vengala Rao, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, received Him. Accompanied by the Chief Minister, Baba then moved in a procession to the Sarva Dharma Aikya Stupa. The Stupa was then inaugurated by the Chief Minister. On 23rd evening, Members of Sathya Sai Central Trust; the State Presidents of Sri Sathya Sai Organisation from India and all over the world; Sri T. A. Pai, Minister for Heavy Industries and Civil Supply; Sri Subbarayudu and Sri Sagi Suryanarayana Raju, Ministers of Govt. of Andhra Pradesh; offered their homage at the Lotus Feet at Poornachandra Auditorium. Baba then delivered His Birthday Message. He gave Darshan seated in the Jhoola on the 24th night.

Unity of all religions and that all religions are holy paths to the same goal was underscored. It was emphasised to make organisation acceptable to people of all religions and all castes. Furthermore, it was decided to form the World Council of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations.

At the conclusion of the World Conference on 22nd November, Baba nominated the following members as the Members of the Governing Body of the World Council of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations: Sri Indulal Shah, Dr. J. Hislop, Dr. K. Pani, Sri S. Sitaram, the Rajmata of Navanagar, Dr. Bhagavantam, Sri Sohanlal, Sri Balesingham, and Mrs. Natalie Santos.

It was during the 50th Birthday celebrations that Baba most graciously permitted the Sathya Sai Organisation worldwide to hold the 24-hour Akhanda Bhajan on the same day at the same time globally. It was to commence at 6.30 pm on the second Saturday of November and end at 6.30 pm on Sunday.

Sixth All India Conference of Office Bearers , January, 1974

Baba inaugurated the Sixth All India Conference of Office Bearers of the Sathya Sai Organisations at Rajahmundry in January 1974. Over 6,000 delegates from all over India attended the conference. In addition, 750 Bal Vikas Gurus participated in the All India Conference of Bal Vikas Gurus held in the Divine Presence. Swami Karunyananda took all the necessary efforts to organise these conferences under Babas direct supervision. Babas Discourses helped integrate the office bearers into an effective instrument in His mission. Baba blessed the Bal Vikas Movement describing it as the basic activity of the Sai Movement and the Gurus as its most useful pioneers. Babas presence during all the three days of the conference motivated the delegates who had come from distant places like Calcutta, Bihar and Patna.

An emphatic call was given to the workers of the organisation to intensify their Sadhana through devotion, discipline and duty and to be exemplary to others. It was also decided that Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithis shall hereunto be unregistered bodies.

Second All India Sri Sathya Sai Seva Dal Conference, October 9-10, 1972

Baba inaugurated the 2nd All India Sri Sathya Sai Seva Dal Conference on 9th morning. Sri Nakul Sen, Lieutenant Governor of Goa, presided over the conference. Prof. Gokak offered at the Lotus Feet his new book – ‘Narahari, Prophet of New India’ on this occasion. Baba then delivered His Inaugural Address. He addressed the delegates on 10th morning also. At the evening session, Baba elaborated on the final resolutions arrived at during the conference which He approved of.
