Installation of Sanitary Napkins Machines

Place: Vijayawada Rural Schools – March 2018

Introduction:

With the changing times the requirement at various levels has increased and Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation is always coming forward to fulfil the needs of variety of people and one such very important is to provide health related hygiene personal product to rural girl students. This has proved to be very successful and protecting the dignity of village girls who are deprived of such facilities due to poverty and unavailability of such products at affordable cost.

Awareness through Social Media:

With divine blessings from our beloved Mother Sai, the members of mahila youth from Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh always prayed Bhagawan Baba to provide them us with opportunities for seva. It has come through TV channels, an innovative program that gave wings to new ideas. It was all about setting up of Sanitary Napkin vending and Sanitary Napkin destroyer machines in municipal schools by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation on trail basis.

Inspiration for Taking up the Activity:

This very program inspired Mahila Youth wing to adopt this innovative product at ZP schools in rural areas. In order to bring shape for these thoughts, members started gathering preliminary information and enquired different schools and even they had conversation with girl students in government schools regarding the use of sanitary napkins and the advantage of vending machine.

Dire Need for the Students: 

During the groundwork, it became aware of some painful facts that even today few girls were unable to afford sanitary napkins while some girls were still not aware of using them. The exercise enabled the members’ conviction to become even stronger. With the support and help of District President, Krishna District, Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, this was taken in small steps in joining hands towards healthier society.

Company Information:

With extensive search and enquiry for these machines, came in contact with Sara Equipments from Tamilnadu. Members had a couple of conversations in which the company provided the details on different vending machines which can be broadly classified into three based on criteria.

  1. Based on type of operation (Mechanical and Electrical)
  2. Based on storage capacity (30 napkin storage and 60 napkin storage)
  3. Based on usage of coin (Rs 2.00 coin, Rs 5.00 coin & Rs 10.00 coin)

The company also has wide range of destroyer machines (based on the capacity to destroy the napkins/day).

Machines in Schools:

The machine models were selected on number of girl students in the school. Furthermore, it was planned to provide sanitary napkins for first two months to the school, so that they can have sufficient time to gain adequate income which can be used for purchase of sanitary napkins. In addition, at the time of providing these machines to schools, small interactive sessions were conducted for girl students and lady teachers of the school. Through these sessions, it was tried to bring awareness among rural girls on proper hygienic processes that are ought to be followed during periods.

Machines in one School & one College functioning:

In this regard, a Sanitary Napkin Vending Machine and Destroyer machine were installed at DISTRICT INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION TRAINING (DIET), Angaluru, Krishna district on 03.03.2018. More than 200 girl students get benefitted with these machines.

On the other hand Personality Development programme by Smt. Nirmal, retired principal was conducted on Time Management – how to prepare for upcoming examinations and then with a brief talk by Smt. K. Pramada , on the importance of Self Confidence. Final session was mainly focused on health and hygiene, where Importance of sanitary napkin usage, consequences of not using them and other proper health practices were guided by a Government Doctor Smt.Dr. Rekha .

The members are grateful to Swami, for providing them with this wonderful opportunity. Now, the machines have been provided to one school and one college. Received very positive and encouraging feedback from the students and members expressed satisfaction and this gave enthusiasm to further extend this facility to few more schools/colleges. The Youth mahila members have sincerely prayed Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba to give them strength to move forth in HIS Mission “Love All and Serve ALL”.

Near Future Plans:

It is planned to install similar machines in three more ZP schools in a couple of months.
