Place: Karnataka State-India

As Mahatma Gandhi, the father of India said India lives in rural areas and it is the real development when these villagers are served and looked after of their needs. Any progress is possible if it is planned and executed on a long term basis and with continuous sincere efforts and for the interaction of villages and for conducting various activities a proper place is required.

Inspiration & Divine Blessings:

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, India took up intense activities of all the three wings activities’ of the Organisation (Spiritual, Service and Educational), spanning a three year period from 1983 to 1985 as part of the 60th Birthday Celebrations of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. During that period, HE exhorted the members of the Organisation to take up Service Activity in Villages to benefit the rural poor. HE assured that HE would manifest Himself wherever this work is being done. He also assured that the Organisation members will find HIS presence in those villages even as they reached those places.

As a response to this Inspiring Call for Service in Villages, Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, Karnataka, adopted number of villages and took up service activities. As part of such activities it was felt that there was a need to create Rural Service Centers in selected villages for the benefit of the residents of those villages and of the nearby cluster of villages.

Creating 61 Service Centers:

The dreams were fulfilled in 1988, when it was planned for the Rural Service Centers and Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in HIS infinite compassion and mercy, christened these service centres as SRI SATHYA SAI GRAMA SEVA KENDRAS, which is unique to the State of Karnataka!

During the last 25 years, 61 such service centres were constructed and were dedicated for the development of the villagers. The villages, where these centres have been constructed, have population of 500 – 700 people and residents of nearby cluster of villages have also been using them. Members of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations have voluntarily contributed over Rs.10 to 12 Crores (US dollars 1.92 to 2.3 million) towards the construction of these centres. These villages are normally at a distance of minimum 10 km to 15 km and sometimes even up to 30 km,  from the nearest town / city where the Sri Sathya Sai Samithi (main centre) is located, whose members assist in the activities of these service centers.

Quality Construction:

While constructing these centers, utmost care has been taken to ensure that it meets all the needs of the village community, Organisation activities and also provide aesthetically pleasing looks. They are well ventilated and provided with good flooring. They are also equipped with basic requirements as well as many other facilities.

All the activities that contribute to the betterment and welfare of the local community are generally taken up at these service centers and they serve to all communities irrespective of caste, colour, religion etc. They broadly include the activities relating to,

  • Health Care
  • Educare,
  • Socio Care
  • Spiritual Care
  • Agricare
  • Veterinary Care
  • Women empowerment
  • Vocational guidance to youth
  • Environment care

Spread of the Service Centers:

The 61 service centers are spread across in 24 Districts of Karnataka State, with North Kanara District alone having 13 of them and Mysore and Shimoga Districts have 7 each followed by Hassan District with 4.

Thanks Giving & Change of Life Style:

These service centers have been changing the lives of the villagers and gradually the villagers are tuned to self-less service and with the training and orientation given, the youth and elders, both men and women, from these villages, voluntarily participate in the Service at Ashram (Spiritual Center) of Sathya Sai Baba in Bangalore City and Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty Hospital, Whitefield, Bangalore, India as a Thanks-giving gesture to their beloved Master, Sri Sathya Sai Baba for having blessed them with these village service centers!

Village Tradition to City Boys:

Recently, Rural Youth belonging to Village Kanthanahalli in Shimoga District, came to Bangalore and trained the students of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Brindavan Campus, in the folk art of playing on Dhol (a sort of drum beat), which the students performed during the Annual Sports Day cat Prasanthi Nilayam on 11th January, 2013!

Volunteers and villagers who hava participated in the activities of these centers have been blessed to realize the truth of the assurance given by Sri Sathya Sai Baba that He would manifest Himself in these Villages! These Rural Service Centers have verily proved to be harbingers of change for the inhabitants of 61 villages in Karnataka State in India by giving a new meaning and purpose to their lives. Volunteers of Sri Sathya Sai Service Organisation, who have helped create these Service centers, feel a sense of fulfillment of their Spiritual and moral values.

Future Plan:

This activity of creating Rural Service Centers is being continued and it is proposed to complete 90 Rural Service Centres by 2015 when celebrating Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s 90th Birthday and Golden Jubilee of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation. The goal is to open service centres in every Sri Sathya Sai District of Karnataka State before 2015. It is the earnest desire and prayers to God by all the volunteers for continued blessings to create more such centres so that every villager can be touched and make sincere efforts to change of his/her life style.

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, Karnataka, feel blessed that in a small way, they could make a humble beginning in creating Healthy and Happy Villages!
