Cleaning of 65 km of National Highway – Darjeeling North and South, West Bengal
The Queen of the Hills, as most other hilly regions, has had its share of endangered mountain highways often rendered impassable by landslides and such. The NH 55, an arterial road that connects the plains to the hills from Siliguri to Darjeeling becomes unnavigable after rains. To prevent landslides due to overflowing of rain water owing to blockage of drains, a massive highway drain cleaning is jointly undertaken by the districts of Darjeeling South and Darjeeling North each year on 1st May since 2007.
This year saw active participation from more than 3,500 members, that included Bal Vikas students, parents, and sevadal, who worked tirelessly from early morning to late afternoon. As a special mark of distinction this year, the sevadal were joined at distinct locations by the All India President, the National Vice President, the National Coordinators and the State Team of West Bengal which included the State President, State Vice Presidents and the State Coordinators. The entourage was en-route to Bagdogra Airport from Darjeeling as a part of the visit of the All India President’s visit to West Bengal.
